The controversial new reality series chronicling a spirited group of self-described “guidos” living in a New Jersey beach house has drawn protests of increasing volume. Now it appears that calls for a boycott are having an impact.
The Italian-American group UNICO (which also protested HBO’s “The Sopranos”) has asked members to complain to MTV’s advertisers. In the past couple of days, two advertisers on the show — Domino’s Pizza and American Family Insurance — have pulled out of the series, as you can see in jersey shore episode 3 online.
In addition, one major media outlet reported that MTV New York offices were receiving death threats because of the show. The network has denied the report.

“(‘Jersey Shore’ furthers) the popular TV notion that Italian-Americans are gel-haired, thuggish ignoramuses with fake tans, no manners, no diction, no taste, no education, no sexual discretion, no hairdressers (for sure), no real knowledge of Italian culture and no ambition beyond expanding steroid- and silicone-enhanced bodies,” blasted New York Post critic Linda Stasi on Monday. “Would that programing ever have been allowed if the group were African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Jewish people?”

MTV president of programing Tony DiSanto, an Italian-American, has remained largely mum on the subject, though he told one group, “The cast takes pride in their ethnicity. In fact, it is a key driver of how they bond with each other and self-identify. They refer to themselves as ‘guidos’ in a positive manner.”

Our American culture is one that has become obsessed with all things celebrity.  We often know more about the love lives and personal struggles of the top Hollywood movie stars, sports figures and athletes, and singers in our country than we do about members of our own families.  Moreover, all of this information can be gathered just from standing in line at the grocery store.  We have television programs—even entire networks—that are dedicated to tracking the day-to-day lives of celebrities and public figures.  For some reason, the interest from readers and viewers seems to be heightened when the celebrity or public figure is going through a rough period in his or her life.  Just think about the fascination with Britney Spears’ infamous meltdown during which she adopted a carefree hairstyle, did some damage with an umbrella, and lost custody of her children.  Those images were plastered everywhere.  Patrick Swayze is currently battling with courage against an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer, but the tabloids cannot wait to publish photos of him looking like his death is imminent.  What is it about us that create such a fascination with watching others fall?

One area of celebrity life in which the public interest is particularly peaked is the difficult decision that two people make to file for a divorce.  Every couple that decides to split faces difficult emotional and legal struggles.  Add to this a media spotlight that scrutinizes every detail of the divorce proceedings and a public that determines the probable cause for the animosity and the guilty parties and you have what can quickly become an unbearable situation for the participants.  Whether appropriate or not, there are countless high-profile celebrity divorces that have captivated our attention.  Elizabeth Taylor was one of the frontrunners in achieving the media spotlight on her many divorces.  More recently, we have gone through the sagas of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, and countless others.  Just rectnly, Mel Gibson and his wife of twenty-eight years have announced that they will be getting a divorce.  Web sites and talk shows are already buzzing about how this legal settlement will be the most expensive in celebrity divorce settlement history.  There always seems to be a new celebrity relationship ending in a volatile fashion to satisfy our appetites for gossip.

What often gets lost in these stories is the fact that two very real people, with emotions and feelings, are caught up in the circumstances.  There also may be innocent children involved who did not ask to be celebrities and now face the possibility of seeing their parents’ personal arguments splashed across the evening news.  Child custody and divorce attorneys who work with celebrities must be aware of the heightened need for privacy concerning all documentation that is printed and every conversation that takes place within office walls.  That is why it is so important to hire the right law firm.

The High Definition Scheduling Dance of NBC Late Night

Sports fans no longer have to look to NFL Sunday Ticket for competition on their high definition televisions.  Thanks to NBC´s late night scheduling debacle, TV viewers are getting their fair share of contests and rivalries five days a week.  

Last year, Jay Leno renounced his position as host of The Tonight Show, handing the historic program over to his successor, Conan O’Brien.  The shift came as a result not of Leno´s low ratings (he had been a very strong player in late night television and largely outdone his fiercest competitor, David Letterman) but instead of contractual obligations that promised O’Brien the spot in 2009.  And after a few weeks of rumors and suspicions (Would NBC really replace viewer-friendly ratings-hog Jay Leno with the more obscure humor of Conan O’Brien?), Leno bowed out gracefully.

In September, Jay Leno began a new show in a new format.  The Jay Leno Show was to air from 10:00 to 11:00 every night before the local evening news.  Put up against the traditional dramas of the time spot on CBS, ABC and other networks, NBC executives hoped that the new show would be a refreshing option for viewers.  

While at first Leno´s new program started off strong, ratings soon dwindled.  It was not holding up against dramas as had been hoped, nor was it aiding a helping hand to the local news programs that followed it.  

O’Brien also faced his fair share of success followed by dwindling numbers.  Though younger audiences were enthusiastic about the comedian’s invigoration of the show, older viewers were not so pleased with his sometimes off-beat, non-traditional humor.  As Conan O’Brien’s ratings fell, those of David Letterman rose as more and more viewers changed the channel to CBS at 11:35.  

With both hosts and shows struggling, NBC executives found themselves in quite a pickle when deciding what to do.

In the first week of January, rumbles began that a shake-up was in order at the network.  Soon, the announcement came – The Jay Leno Show would be cancelled in February.  The implications of the announcement, however, were not – and still are not – clear.

After the Olympics, viewers don’t yet know what they will be seeing late at night on NBC on their high definition televisions.  In an effort to keep both O’Brien and Leno content, network executives are in a scramble to rework schedules and shows in order to find a resolution.  Also waiting patiently in the wings are Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daly, whose schedules and, perhaps, job descriptions will be affected by the outcome of this debacle.

There are no clear signs yet as to what will happen in this NBC late night sports event.  O’Brien has released a statement that seems to suggest that he has taken a stand against the network bullies and will refuse to move to a 12:05 timeslot.  And while some rumors suggest that Leno will happily accept his 11:35 schedule again, and maybe even his title as host of The Tonight Show, others suggest he may be abandoning NBC all together.  Only time will tell what the future has in store for NBC late night TV.

Artie Lange Stabbed Himself Released From Hospital

Artie Lange has been released from Jersey Center Medical Center, where he underwent surgery last Saturday after his mother found him in his Hoboken, NJ apartment with nine stab wounds to his abdominal area from a 13-inch Wolfgang Puck kitchen knife, police confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. “At this point, we’ve deemed it to be self-inflicted and attempted suicide,” Hoboken Det. Lt. Mark Competello said. “There’s no criminal investigation.”

Lange sustained six “hesitation wounds” and three deep plunges, sources told The Post. A source close to Lange’s management team confirmed that Howard Stern’s sidekick stabbed himself. Surgeons managed to save Lange.

Stern vowed to keep quiet about Lange’s condition during his Sirius Satellite Radio show Monday but lifted the ban Thursday. “I would love to know who the scumbag is who releases that to the press, because this is a private matter,” Stern said. “I don’t know what to say. I work with Artie, I love Artie. Everyone has their demons, including myself, but he’s wrestling with some serious stuff … When I heard the news it was too much to bear.”

Lange has had a history of substance abuse issues, including when he checked himself into a rehab clinic in late 2008. In 2009, Lange was busted for DUI (prescription sleeping pills) after crashing his car into Toms River in July.

Regarding Lange’s addictions, Stern said, “I’ve always tried to maintain my loyalty to Artie, and at times it’s very trying, because Artie has had some tough times and people would even come to me and say, ‘Its not fair, he’s not showing up for work.’ It’s because of his great talent and my affection for him that I would [accept that] — he had a real problem.”
